R.I.P. Nipsey Hussle

May 31, 2019

On Sunday, March 31, influential rapper Ermias Asghedom, better known as Nipsey Hussle, was fatally shot outside of his clothing store in Los Angeles. Asghedoms first studio album, titled Victory Lap, was released of February 2018, and peaked at #4 on the music charts. That album also won him his first and only grammy nomination for Best Rap Album. Back in 2010, he founded the record label “All Money In Records”, where he dropped a few of his mixtapes and signed seven other artists. Not only was he a talented and influential musical artist, he also was a staple member in his community. Mark Ridley-Thomas, a board member of Supervisors in southern L.A, said that “Nipsey Hussle, was a father, businessman, entertainer, and inspiration to many". On April 1, he was scheduled to meet with the LA Police Commissioner to discuss ways that they could put an end to gang violence. He frequently met with city officials and other prominent figures in his community, trying to end gang violence, and improve life for the children in the community in which he was raised and grew up in. He went to schools, talked to children and tried to encourage them to do good and be successful. He also was an entrepreneur as well, as he owned Marathon Clothing, the store were he was killed, multiple restaurants, barbers, and a cell phone shop. Eric Holder, 29,  was arrested for the murder on April 2nd, three days after he commited the crime. Michael Moore, the LA police chief, stated that Holder was believed to be in a gang. He mentioned that Hussle was also involved in gangs growing up, but that he thought the two had a personal problem with each other that was beyond gangs. Many celebrities were saddened and shared their condolences. Athletes such as Russel Westbrook and LeBron James paid their respects, and Westbrook even put up 20 points, 20 rebounds, and 21 assists in a single game. To put it into perspective, the average statline for an NBA player is 12.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. This has only been done once before, and he dedicated the game to the late rapper. Record producer and musical artist Pharrell Williams took to Twitter to say “You were about something. Positive and for your community in every chance you had to speak. And because of that you inspired millions...millions who will uphold your legacy forever. Rest amongst the stars”. R.I.P Nipsey Hussle.
