Harry and Markle Walking away from the Royal Life
By Cecilia Ridgeway
There are seven regular monarchies and 21 constitutional monarchies in the world. A regular monarchy has one ruler who controls a certain place and has most of the power, while a constitutional monarchy is when a leader rules over the land but is limited by a constitution, hence the name.
As many know, the United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy. Since 1952 the queen of England has been Queen Elizabeth ll. She is currently married to Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh.
We don’t hear much of England and the royal family, but when we heard that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were planning on leaving the royal family, that sparked a lot of interest, curiosity, and backlash.
Harry and Markle got married on May 19th, 2018 at Windsor Castle in the United Kingdom, after Markle had been an actress on television shows like The Suits, and Deal or No Deal. She graduated from the Northwestern University School of Communication in 2003 and has become an advocate for biracial women, as well as women in general, by speaking out about how she navigated Hollywood and how she found her voice as a young actress. They had their son Archie in May 2019.
Around the end of January Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex and Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, announced their plans to leave the royal family. “This exact situation hasn’t ever happened; what we've had is when Edward Vlll abdicated the throne when he was King and wanted to marry an American who had been divorced, which wouldn’t have been okay,” Peter Opps, a history teacher at La Follette, said. Abdicated means someone is renouncing their kingship or resigning from their position.
The couple wanted to take a step back in order to become financially independent. They will drop all of their duties, and will no longer receive security from the royal kingdom come spring of 2020. If they want security they have to buy it for themselves.
"Our hope was to continue serving the Queen, the commonwealth, and my military associations, but without public funding. Unfortunately, that wasn't possible," Harry said while speaking at a charity dinner.
According to a New York Times article, the Palace had given them an in or out option, but as Harry said, they chose out. Although they are leaving, Harry is going to remain a prince by blood and sixth in line for the throne. The couple is allowed to keep their Duke and Duchess titles as well, but Harry will no longer be considered royalty.
This isn’t the end for Markle and Harry, for they will be starting a charity project this spring to start off their community work. For now, we will have to wait and see how they adapt to new surroundings and a completely new lifestyle.
