Hey Soccer Fans, Guess What?
Madison is going to have a USL League One club! The team, called Forward Madison FC, has not yet been announced as what team it will be the affiliate of, though it is expected to be the affiliate of the Minnesota United club. The team gets its name from the Wisconsin state motto “forward,” and the location of the team being Madison. The new team will start in the 2019 season and will play at Breese Stevens Field, built in 1926 and included in the National Registry of Historical Places downtown. The team’s headquarters is located right next to Breese Stevens. The stadium, which is a protected landmark, has had a few improvements in recent years. AstroTurf and a concessions/restroom building have been put in place in previous years and now there are proposals to have a hospitality built atop that building, which is currently receiving renovations. There are also proposals to have more bleachers and accessibility features put in. Forward Madison FC is now selling merchandise, tickets are on sale and they recently revealed their logo. The logo features the team name, Forward Madison FC, and the area code 608 is shown in Roman Numerals. The logo showcases a pink flamingo, or at least a plastic one, a Madison tradition that started in 1979 as a prank. The combination of pink and blue will be worn proudly by its fans and players soon. The team held tryouts and is in the process of signing players for its inaugural season.
